Millard Fillmore, the 13th President of the United States, served from 1850 to 1853 following the death of Zachary Taylor. A member of the Whig Party, Fillmore was a staunch supporter of the Compromise of 1850, a series of legislative measures aimed at easing sectional tensions between the North and South. His presidency was marked by his efforts to balance the interests of both sides, but his support for the Fugitive Slave Act, a controversial component of the compromise, fueled criticism from abolitionists. After leaving office, Fillmore continued to be involved in political affairs and attempted to revive his political career with the Know-Nothing Party in the 1856 presidential election, though he was ultimately unsuccessful. His legacy is often overshadowed by the tumultuous events leading up to the Civil War.
