Rutherford B. Hayes (1822–1893) was the 19th President of the United States, serving from 1877 to 1881, and is best known for his controversial election and efforts to reconcile a nation still recovering from the Civil War. Born in Delaware, Ohio, Hayes was a lawyer, Civil War veteran, and governor of Ohio before ascending to the presidency. His election followed the disputed 1876 race against Samuel J. Tilden, resolved by the Compromise of 1877, which ended federal Reconstruction efforts in the South in exchange for Hayes's presidency. As president, Hayes advocated for civil service reform, worked to restore trust in government, and oversaw the withdrawal of federal troops from the South, which effectively ended Reconstruction. Though his presidency was met with mixed reviews, Hayes is remembered for his commitment to ending political patronage and his emphasis on national unity. After leaving office, he dedicated himself to humanitarian causes, particularly education and prison reform.
